"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" is the highly regarded book by Jonathan Safran Foer.  It tells the story of a young boy two years after his father's death in 9/11 who on finding a key of his father's starts a city-wide mission to discover what it opens.
This incredible movie releases in cinemas soon starring Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullow, Max Von Syndow so if you want to read the book first you'll need to be quick.  Click on the cover on the right for more information and pricing.
If you've already read it - comment on what you thought below.  Will the movie be as good?

Jamie Oliver - Books, DVDs, Kitchen gadgets and more

Jamie Oliver is the ever talented "Naked Chef" and his books, TV shows and crusades against unhealthy diets, processed foods and cruelty in the farming/food processing industry are well known.  One or two of his kitchenware products are also well known but the range available now is quite extensive.
Jamie Oliver kitchen products not only perform well - as a chef would demand - but they are designed beautifully.  Simple elegant designs that I absolutely love.  One of my special favourites is the Jamie Oliver cutlery set - no fussiness, just well balanced simplicity with lovely lines.
Check out the video on the right for three quick recipes from Jamie using his 3-in-1 peeler, silicon brush and the amazing Garlic press/cutter in the preparation.

Developing the Pleasure of Reading - through Movies

28/1/2012

Sometimes it can be hard to encourage kids young and old into reading.  Once they've mastered the basic skills of reading, some lose the enthusiasm and either don't transition well into chapter books or teens give up on it all together.  Reading as a  habit is important for education, entertainment and relaxation and it seems a shame when people don't discover that for themselves.

One of my sons took to reading readily and devoured the Harry Potter series by age 8, but the other just decided that reading was "not his thing".  Books made into movies are one of the best tools we have to help pre-teen and teenage children to develop the habit and joy of reading.  And luckily many of the most popular movies are based on books and several are part of a series that can hook them into the joy of reading.  In my case is was the Percy Jackson movie/book which launched my younger son into reading the whole series of six books plus anything else I could find on Greek Gods.

Below is a list of books that have been, or are about to be, made into movies that are suitable for kids and/or teenagers.  For more examples of books that may encourage your own reading or that of even older children, vistit our Movies from Books page.

Movies from Books: The Hunger Games

One of My Favourite sections of the My Favourites website is the Movies from Books page.  Some books are just so fantastic that the movie version cannot do full justice to it - in others the movie simply cannot contain all the glorious detail.  The Movies from Books page has dozens of books that have been made into movies and with our best endeavours we will try to keep a supply of new books about to be made into movies.  One example being the up-coming "Hunger Games".

Coming to theatres in March, "The Hunger Games" based on the trilogy by  Suzanne Collins.  The trilogy has as its heroine 16 year old Katniss Everdeen who must train to represent her District in The Hunger Games - a televised fight to the death.  Set in the near future this series will be popular with teen-readers that enjoyed the "Tomorrow When the War Began" series as well as with a more mature audience.

Enjoy the series, or at least the first book, before the movie comes out.

Have you read any great books that you've heard are about to be made into a movie?
