Master Chef is back on our screens and dominating the viewing for Tuesday and Saturday nights.  It appears that Master Chef brings out the ingenuity of home chefs around the world and, whether it's from the local show or overseas franchises, you can be sure that Master Chef cookbooks bring together an ecclectic mix of inspired cookery.
If you just can't get enough of Master Chef or you want to get your hands on some Master Chef tips and recipes then check out the great selection of the best Master Chef cookbooks below.  My favouite is the one I can't get my hands on yet - Nadia's Kitchen.
Pre-order "Nadia's Kitchen" Now Nadia Lim was the winner of Master Chef New Zealand in 2011. Her relative youth, she's 25, combined with her Kiwi/Malaysian heritage means her cooking style is deliciously modern.  Some of the recipes inher new book include: Mint & Caper Lamb, Lime Coconut Bombes with Raspberry Sauce (yum!), Chocolate  Panna Cotta with Plum Sorbet, Cranberry Coconut Cake and so much more for you to enjoy.
Jax Cooks:  She's fronting some Countdown TV ads at the moment but her cookbook gives you 90 of her favourite recipes that represent her story told in food.  Sub-titled "Great Food for Family & Friends", the recipes have Jax's simplicity and great flavours.
Master Chef New Zealand Vol 2 This is the book of the 2011 series and includes extra information from the Master Classes.  The best recipes from the Top 12 contestants and the three judges Simon Gault, Ray McVinnie and Josh Emmett are included with spectacular colour photography to whet your appetitie.
The MasterChef Kitchen Bible from the UK is as focused on kitchen skills as it is on classic recipes that should be in any Master Chef's repertoir.
The Junior Master Chef Cookbook from the Australian series is perfect for budding Master Chefs who want to extend their skills or even for adults who were embarasses at how great the kid-chefs were on that show.

Jamie Oliver is the ever talented "Naked Chef" and his books, TV shows and crusades against unhealthy diets, processed foods and cruelty in the farming/food processing industry are well known.  One or two of his kitchenware products are also well known but the range available now is quite extensive.
Jamie Oliver kitchen products not only perform well - as a chef would demand - but they are designed beautifully.  Simple elegant designs that I absolutely love.  One of my special favourites is the Jamie Oliver cutlery set - no fussiness, just well balanced simplicity with lovely lines.
Check out the video on the right for three quick recipes from Jamie using his 3-in-1 peeler, silicon brush and the amazing Garlic press/cutter in the preparation.

Heat in a Click - Sore necks, cold hands or babies bottles

12/2/2012

When I first discovered the "Heat in a Click" pads I thought their main use was as a hand warmer - oh how little I realised.

The amazing "Heat-in-a-Click" pads make instant and portable heat up to 54 degrees simply by clicking the disc inside them.   Incredibly versatile for a number of situations.
Totally reuseable, portable and require no electricity or microwave to create  the instant heat.  The pads are recharged by boiling them in advance for 7-12 minutes.  Once charged the pads cool down and are primed for use whenever you need them.
They come in a range of sizes starting at just $12 and
have loads of uses including:
  • for muscle aches and sore necks
  • to replace a hot water bottle
  • to warm hands
  • to heat a baby's bottle
  • to keep food warm
To see how versatile the "Heat-in-A-Click" pads are watch the You Tube video on the right or click on the product images for
more information.

Do you have any "Heat-in-a-Click" pads? How do you use yours?

Superb Silicon in the Kitchen

Silicon cookware is great (although sometimes a good-oldfashioned tin is more suitable).  But now here are two less common silicon items that we're very keen on.  The first is a silicon oil-wand with a dripless valve.  No more moulting brushes leaving bristles on your food.  This silicon brush with an oil reservoir and cover is dishwasher safe and incredibly handy for basting or greasing trays.

But of course these colourful silicon cup-cake moulds on the right won't need oiling.  They come in a set of 6 for just $12 (might need two sets) and a bright, colourful, non-stick and of course re-usable.  You can check out my other favourite kitchen gadgets on the Kitchen Gadgets page.

Foods that Harm, Foods that Heal

This is the ultimate reference guide when it comes to food and food-related health.  It's not a cookbook although every cook would love it, it's not a diet book although there's diet advice to be had ... you could almost call an encyclopedia of food and health with a New Zealand & Australian perspective.  My copy is one from the original print run by Readers Digest although it has been updated and reprinted since and I believe it's sold over 7 million copies worldwide.
It is presented as an A-Z and so you can look up the food  or medical condition that you're interested in very easily.  It's practical, accessible with illustrations and is packed full of information.  Some examples include:The information is based on inIt's been compiled with contributions from more than 350 experts and many New Zealand & Australian organisations.
  • A list of drinks comparing their caffeine content
  • An article on how food and nutrition can affect cancer
  • A section on sleep and your diet
  • The benefits and drawbacks of hundreds of foods
  • Guidance on foods that may worsen or lessen the effects of lots of
conditions from arthritis and sinusitis to psoriasis
  • A discussion on sports nutrition.
Now I know there are many specialist books on each of these
topics (not to mention Wikipedia) but this is a good generalist reference book
to keep on hand and it's presented in such a way that you can just pick it up
from time to time and browse through it picking up something new each
time.

Developing the Pleasure of Reading - through Movies

28/1/2012

Sometimes it can be hard to encourage kids young and old into reading.  Once they've mastered the basic skills of reading, some lose the enthusiasm and either don't transition well into chapter books or teens give up on it all together.  Reading as a  habit is important for education, entertainment and relaxation and it seems a shame when people don't discover that for themselves.

One of my sons took to reading readily and devoured the Harry Potter series by age 8, but the other just decided that reading was "not his thing".  Books made into movies are one of the best tools we have to help pre-teen and teenage children to develop the habit and joy of reading.  And luckily many of the most popular movies are based on books and several are part of a series that can hook them into the joy of reading.  In my case is was the Percy Jackson movie/book which launched my younger son into reading the whole series of six books plus anything else I could find on Greek Gods.

Below is a list of books that have been, or are about to be, made into movies that are suitable for kids and/or teenagers.  For more examples of books that may encourage your own reading or that of even older children, vistit our Movies from Books page.

The Sweet Smell of Perfume Savings

28/1/2012

We all have at least one favourite perfume - a fragrance we love and buy over and over again.  Well the Fishpond website lets you make enormous savings on all the big brands.  They have perfume deals on brands like Elizabeth Arden, Chanel, Givenchy, Estee Lauder, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vera Wang as well as all the Celebrity perfumes like Elizabeth Taylor, Britney Spear, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera etc.  They also have leading brand cosmetics like , Shiseido, Max Factor, Clinique, Clarins and RevlonOPI nail laquer.

Perfume and cosmetics are alot cheaper buying online and Fishpond sources from its local, US and UK connections for authentic big brand perfumes.  I must admit I'm not a fan of exploiting retailers (checking out new perfumes in-store only to buy online) however when you already have your favourite why not seek out deals online.

Check out prices for your favourite perfume by typing it in the Fishpond search box on the right.  You'll find you get multiple listings for each perfume depending on where it's being sourced from and the size of bottle.  Some can be shipped virtually immediately while others may take up to three weeks - but if it's your favourite you'll know when it's running out and can order in time to enjoy the savings.

Let us know how you go with prices on your favourites.  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Movies from Books: The Hunger Games

26/1/2012

One of My Favourite sections of the My Favourites website is the Movies from Books page.  Some books are just so fantastic that the movie version cannot do full justice to it - in others the movie simply cannot contain all the glorious detail.  The Movies from Books page has dozens of books that have been made into movies and with our best endeavours we will try to keep a supply of new books about to be made into movies.  One example being the up-coming "Hunger Games".

Coming to theatres in March, "The Hunger Games" based on the trilogy by  Suzanne Collins.  The trilogy has as its heroine 16 year old Katniss Everdeen who must train to represent her District in The Hunger Games - a televised fight to the death.  Set in the near future this series will be popular with teen-readers that enjoyed the "Tomorrow When the War Began" series as well as with a more mature audience.

Enjoy the series, or at least the first book, before the movie comes out.

Have you read any great books that you've heard are about to be made into a movie?

Welcome to My Favourites first blog!!  For those of you who have visited the site before, we felt a blog would allow you to focus in on the new Favourites that we've added to the site.  This is a celebration of our favourite products with most being available online so that no matter where you live you can access the product for yourself.  We don't sell the products and the inclusion of items on the site is unashamedly subjective - they are after all My Favourites but perhaps they'll become yours too.
